Default Invalid .svg file - Illustrator CS4 error

I am trying to open a .svg file I received from a customer. Illustrator comes back with this error:

"This SVG is invalid. Validate it before opening"

How do I do this? Also, what program uses SVG files?

Running Illustrator CS4 14.0.0 on and iMac running OSX 10.5.8 (not on Snow Leopard yet)

I found the following on the web - hopefully it will be of some help.

At this url find and read comments by cami618 and A.B. Dada. At some point A.B. references a validator can be download at this url:

SVG is an XML grammar - so open it up in your favorite text editor (BBEdit?) to see if it looks like an XML file. that will at least tell you if the file is damaged or not.
