    Default InDesign CS4 dropping text

We have board files that we use and print all of the time.
What has been happening lately is that some of the text in boards are disappearing in the boxes.
What makes even less sense is that they are not in the last boxes to be updated when we rework the boards.
We have also been having some font issues too, but the new problem has started happening after we starting having font issues.

are these files created in something other than CS4?
    Like maybe CS2 or CS3?

If so, it is my understanding that Adobe has made some modifications to the text engine in CS4, so rendering fonts could be an issue.
You will need to use the app that created the files when you PDF out (or whatever you do).

I think they were originally created in CS3.

is it a text wrap issue? In your preferences you can set "text wrap only affects text beneath".
Also there was a change in insetts in rounded rectangles.

What I'd like to know is there any oversett text? (your preflight pannel would show error if you do)

If you open the files in CS3 are they ok?

The files have been saved in CS4. When I export then to an interchange file I have the same issue with them.
    The same text is missing.

    Doesn't make much sense.

Also, these are straight text boxes and no matter where I out them or how I resize the box, they are just plain empty.
There are no effects and there are no wrap arounds on anything in the doc.

Did you clean out the font caches?

Several times. Application and system both. Also, tried various versions of the fonts.
It's not just fonts, the text that was in the boxes flat out disappeared from the boxes.
It's on multiple files and different text boxes in each file. One file will have the problem in two boxes out of 20 and the next will have 3 or 4boxes missing text.
We have had some other issues with this Mac in the past, but nothing like this that affects files like this.

Well if it is lost interchange won't solve it. Can you reproduce the error? Is it every time? Is it with some specific font? Is there a pattern? Process hundreds of files and have converted hundreds from CS3 to CS4 never seen text just dissapear, there must be more to it.

Is the text linked to external doc file?

Am i correct in understanding that it is related to a specific machine? Are you working from hard disk or server?

There is no link to anything external.

There seems to be no real rhyme or reason as to what the type boxes that drop the text drop.

The boxes were made by us originally and it may have been created in CS3. We have had some font issues, but you would think that would be something global.

There have been other issues on the machine and we are working off an external hard drive. There are no issues with the hard drive as far as I know. Any machine problems we had had with this computer are with this computer. It's a 24inch iMac - silver.
