    Hi Ryan,

If you are looking at ink save solutions, don't forget OneVision's inksave tool which is part of Speedfow Plus.

We've had many interesting experiences with inksave testing. My favorite is the customer who neglectated to tell their press room they'd be running inksave files. The press room looked at the plates and saw the lack of chromatic colors. They assumed the files were washed out and pumped up the values on press trying to compensate only to discover they used more ink on the saved files than the originals. It was a good laugh. Needless to say, after re-printing the job to the to numbers, they saw the savings they were expecting. Make sure everyone is aware when you test the different products.

    Jon,

We use ECO which was called Publish I think - anyway it is the full package. We also use the ICC profile processor plug in and Color Pursuit.

    Ryan:

You might want to include Agfa's stand-alone Opti-Ink solution,
or Agfa's integrated Apogee InkSave into your comparison.

    Hi Lee,

Could I send you a PDF and have you run it through the CMYK Optimizer and then send it back to me? I'd like to compare it to the original PDF on our proofer.

    Thanks,
    Jon :-)

    Jon,

No problem at all, I will need some more details and will probably be best to do over the phone. Do you want to e-mail me direct with your phone number and we can pick in up outside the forum.

We will be deploying InkDrop in about a month. I let you know what we find.

    Jon,

It would be great if you could post a low resolution version of the file you will using to test the ink reducing technology with.

    thx, gordo

    Hi Ryan,

You can also take a look at the new PerfX Device Link Pro™ which allows to create ICC DeviceLink profiles that you can use directly in workflows which supports ICC DeviceLink profiles. You can set many color specific exceptions like preserving the Black, not only solid but all tints, compensated for the dot gain of the output. You can set ink coverage very low and use our new GCR engine which does better than (m)any ICC profiling softwares on the market!

What you only need is a compatible workflow which supports ICC DeviceLink profiles.

We have been following the Inkdrop evolution for awhile because we are a Rampage shop. My understanding is that you need a third party app to create the DVLP's(Alwan Color Expertise Linkprofiler, Left Dakota Link-O-Later, etc.) I like this workflow because it is late binding. From what I have been told you can use one of the standards(SWOP,GRACol, etc) as your primary
working and proofing space. This is important for us because we print on different papers and presses and these decisions would not need to be made until the job needs to be plated. In the meantime production can create scans, do color edits, scatter proof images using the designated standard without waiting for press and paper decisions. When the customer approves the work and the press and paper decisions have been made the files are ripped through Inkdrop and the proper DVLP is chosen for the press/paper combination. I have been told that the color match at press is excellent(the DVLP's do a much better job than plate curves,) and there is still notable ink savings. I have heard that some coated commercial work is running with TAC's in the 260%-280% range with no apparent visual issues(I still need to witness this myself!) We didn't have budget dollars to make this move this year, but I would hope we can cost justify this for next year. The ROI is supposed to be short, it seems to be a no brainer decision!
    Best regards,
    Todd
