The company I work for is decided on purchasing something called GMG ColorServer.
I hacve absolutly no knowledge of this and have no idea what it actually does, Could anybody in laymens terms tell me what it does and how it will help the company?

Yikes! You're the Digital Print Manager and weren't involved in the decision-making process?
Hopefully you will be able to get "their" rationale so that you can compare that to the responses you get on this forum.
Fear not, Craig, the GMG ColorServer is an excellent product.
Dont let others play "Karl Rove" and make you afraid of something that they also may not understand...:-)
Call Juergen Roesch at GMG in the UK. He is one of the best people in the business.

best, gordon p
I agree Gordon
I would have liked to have been more involved in the decision making but the directors had already decided that this is what they wanted.

If anyone can help you and make sence of it all it will be Juergen Roesch! This man is really a great guy with tons of knowledge. He was a great teacher too!
Juergen Roesch is now nicknamed "The Juergenator" and publishes a monthly column in the trueColors magazine published by GMG in the UK for their domestic customers (international customers can download it from trueColors: GMGColor - no login required). There is even a Chinese version (available at GMGcolor).
You'll find plenty of information in there on ColorServer, as it is the Juergenator's favourite product because of its almost unlimited versatility and unrivaled quality.
- RGB to CMYK separation
- CMYK separation standardisation
- output space transformation
- TAC control
- resolution adjustment (use full res camera RGB in your incoming PDF)
- sharpening (GMG's 3D sharpening looks great in print)
and even more:
- use it to drive all different kinds of digital print devices like Indigo, Durst, Vutek, Inca, UV, solvent, ... (for easy profiling add the SmartProfiler Add-On - next month's trueColors will have a few stories on that product)
We got plenty of industry references from the smallest shops all the way up to the likes of Polestar (you mentioned you are from Sheffield) or IKEA (featured in one of our earliest trueColors).
PPS: and "HI" to Gordo, still remember being once a panel speaker 10 years ago with him at a Seybold in San Francisco (long time ago ...)
Jurgen - holy smokes! I was hoping that was a long forgotten moment in prepress history LOL.
Sept 1999 @ Seybold, that was when printers were very concerned about proofing with CtP since there wasn't any film to make the proofs with. I gave the keynote presentation to set the stage for the panel and audience discussion.
Attached is one of the slides from that presentation.
Things have changed a bit since then for sure!
I think I was still scribbling my notes while you did your part of the presentation.
Right as I write this I am setting up a printer to ISO print standards - ColorServer and its sibling InkOptimizer (GCR tool) part of the package.
And just as in your presentation then it is all about process control and sicking to numbers. While yesterday I had a meeting with one of those printers that believe it being "customer service" if they adjust each job to a customer's liking (or supplied laser printout).
Turns out clients leave and business revenue caused by low margins isn't as good as it used to be ...
