well, i guess it depends on the money you wish to spend and functions you need.
I use crackerjack from pdf store, it was not very expensive and during the test preformed the best of all demos we were able to obtain. It is an acrobat pro plugin, and we acquired licenses for both, win and mac. We use it daily and preforms really ok, it is simple to use and setup.

Another Imposition software is Imposal from PressCheck Software Inc. It is available in both Windows and Mac. You can download the software from PressCheck site. https://www.presschecksoftware.com

Better late than never
If you don't have to integrate the imposition software with an already present workflow (like Prinect, Prinergy, Apogee or Rampage) I suggest a look at Speedflow Impose from Onevision. Powerful imposition of PDFs (PDF in, PDF out), fairly easy to use. We did not have a single job that could not be handled by Impose in years; the user-interface and possibilities are miles ahead of Preps.
ONEVISION -*PDF Imposition
The biggest advantage of SF Impose is it's possibility to define "half-templates". You can e.g. define an 16-up template and tell it that an 8-up is half of that; in the 8-up you define a 4-up as half of that and so on. After that you can choose the 16-up template for a job with let's say 28 pages; Impose uses a 16-up, and finds 12 pages left to work on. 12 is smaller than 16 pages for a full 16-up, so it looks at the previously defined half-templates and chooses an 8-up, then a 4-up for impositioning and arranges them according to prior defined rules into 4-up/8-up (on one form) and an 16-up.
It's pretty nice if you have to impose a lot.

Windows only for the imposition program? I see system requirements list a Mac version of Speedflow Edit 5.5 (Macintosh OSX) but Speedflow Impose 4.0 seems to be windows only? A tip for ONEVISION as well as other software companies, the trial software shouldn't require giving company information out just to try it. I'm seeing that more and more often and, as as a software buyer, it really turns me off. Also listing the prices with the application wouldn't kill ya's.

I've used Preps and SignaStation... and the winner is :
SIGNASTATION !!
Better than Preps (when you discover SignaStation, you realize that Preps is like Neanderthal software)

Absolutely Imposing at 595$ is better than all
Hi GINFAY,
Our new solution, Absolutely Imposing for MAC or PC is actually much better, a lot easier and more powerful than all look-alikes in the category (sub 1000$ such as Quite, Atom, etc.).
At 595$ on special (regular is 795$) it is also unbeatable.
You can try it for FREE by downloading from our Web site:
DEMO Request Form
You'll need Acrobat 7.05+ or 8.1+ or 9.0+
