Default Inline press diagrams for prepress

We're on the verge of drawing up diagrams of different types of inline press configurations for use by prepress, so they [we] can follow the web through turnbars, inline imaging, inline finishing, etc, and by so doing determine during the layout phase which side should be top/bottom, whether components should be built on gear/operator, and other such questions.

Does anyone have any such experience with this sort of undertaking? It will all be drawn [by me] using Adobe applications, and I'm not sure if it would be better [or even feasible] to attempt a sort of realistic isometric or top-down reproduction of the press and its components, or if a more abstract "map" using symbols in place of turnbars and things would be easier to understand.

Any input will be repaid with kind thoughts.
    Thanks, joe
