Well guys, thanks for all the constructive comments. I wish I had found out about this site before I started this job and not during my frantic Googling during/after. As it turns out, the printer is requesting an Illustrator reconstruction... so I'll be up all night but at least I know a little more than I did when I started.

Okay, this is getting ridiculous. Reconstructed the document in Illustrator and there are apparently still problems with the text... he asked if the font I used is defective somehow, but the file I sent him had been converted to outlines anyway to avoid just such a font problem. Is there some problem with converting fonts to outlines before sending to press?

The only other thing I can think of is I used opacity masks to make the area where type would be transparent (since the paper is colored I'm using that as the "ink" for the type.)

At my wit's end here, going to the printer later today to take a look firsthand.

Anything jump out at anybody here?

Instead of using an opacity mask I would suggest using the Pathfinder>Divide function and anything you want to be paper remove from the file completely. I've always had problems when dealing with masks and find this method works for me.
